Colorado 2024. This trip wasn’t guaranteed. We got Corbin a CO elk tag in case Cole tagged out early in Arizona. Luckily after hard scouting Cole tagged out the second day(Saturday)of hunting. Sunday we got up, process and put away meat, packed up and traveled to Colorado, arriving after midnight.Monday we rested and packed food and packs for a multi night trip in the mountains. We planned to go in Tuesday evening, but the rain persisted so we waited til Wednesday. Wednesday we got up at 3am and hiked in and set up camp. We also picked up a leftover Bear rifle tag for Clair. We camped together and split up to hunt, Me(Chad) and Corbin chasing elk and Heather, Clair, Cole and Ellie staying up high and glassing for bear. We never saw a bear, but Clair did find some fresh sign and spent several hours and multiple setups doing some distress calling.Me and Corbin saw or heard elk everyday and it almost came together on our third evening (Friday)when we setup in a finger of timber a few hundred yards from some bedded elk. As the evening progressed the cows fed out in our direction. We must have made just enough noise in the brush to raise the curiosity of a cow. She came over to 10yds investigate us, but unable to get our wind. As the sun set, a bull began bugling and came out to join the cows. As we tried to get in a position for a shot, we again drew attention from the curios cow. She began to bark at us and made the entire herd nervous. With a now or never moment we got the open sight 50cal muzzleloader up for a shot. With our legs fallen asleep from crouching and laying in the brush it was a difficult 130 yard shot and a clean miss. It was one of the most exciting moments elk hunting. Clair, Heather and Cole got to watch the excitement unfold in the binos from a half mile away. Saturday morning we saw nothing, broke camp and hiked out before more weather moved in. Cole got it done in Arizona! His first Elk. Nine days of scouting, Second day of hunting. We were hoping for a bull but couldn’t pass up an opportunity on this cow at the water hole. Rut action was slow, people were everywhere and elk were few and far between. We built a good blind on this hole a few days before the opener after seeing some bulls here. Tried spot N stalk in the mornings with no luck, and the first evening in the blind only resulted in seeing a hunter. 300 win mag with 130gn Barnes reduced recoil and a brake. Sep 16- What was supposed to be a day of elk hunting quickly changed when we spotted this buck feeding towards the timber. Me and Heather were out trying to get her an elk with the Muzzleloader. Like most days the animals didn’t care what are plans were. We climbed 2 miles up to the top of a mountain, arriving right at daylight, to look and listen for elk. Immediately I spotted this buck feeding away. I dropped my pack, took off my boots and gaiter and began to stalk towards him. The morning was as still as it could be and I thought getting in range would be impossible. After 350 yards of creeping along frozen ground in my socks, rocks freezing and sticking to my socks, I found myself 55yds away. The buck had no idea I was there until the bow released. He jumped at the shot, but it was too late, the arrow hit perfect. He ran only 50yds and piled up. We called for backup and Clair and Dustin showed up to help pack out.
