Mississippi 2020 Youth Turkey Season Harvest Report

Mississippi youth hunters reported harvesting 260 gobblers this youth season running March 7th to the 13th. Harvest were down from the 2019 season when hunters reported 349 harvested gobblers.

This decline in harvest run contrary to states like Illinois and Missouri who saw increases of 25% & 7% from 2019 to 2020. What are your thoughts on the decline in harvest from last year? Leave your comment’s below. Check back after the season is over for a full season update.

Sep 16- What was supposed to be a day of elk hunting quickly changed when we spotted this buck feeding towards the timber. Me and Heather were out trying to get her an elk with the Muzzleloader. Like most days the animals didn’t care what are plans were. We climbed 2 miles up to the top of a mountain, arriving right at daylight, to look and listen for elk. Immediately I spotted this buck feeding away. I dropped my pack, took off my boots and gaiter and began to stalk towards him. The morning was as still as it could be and I thought getting in range would be impossible. After 350 yards of creeping along frozen ground in my socks, rocks freezing and sticking to my socks, I found myself 55yds away. The buck had no idea I was there until the bow released. He jumped at the shot, but it was too late, the arrow hit perfect. He ran only 50yds and piled up. We called for backup and Clair and Dustin showed up to help pack out. Sep 2nd- Got it done opening day archery 🏹 in Colorado! The morning started off quick, I planned to stalk for mule deer. But a bull bigger than this bugles just a few hundred yards from the ridge I was sitting waiting on daylight. He came straight to my calls, but ended just as quick when he got my wind just 80 yds away. I went back to looking for mule deer, and after covering a couple miles came across this bull feeding a few hundred yards out in a mix of meadows, timber and brush. As I made an approach to him I spotted three smaller bulls in the brush just a hundred yards in front of me. Without much options for getting around the small bulls without getting busted I decide to try and take one. While stalking into position on the others the bigger bull fed down and around and came into 48yds bugling. He made eye contact and look like he was going to bust out, so I took a frontal shot. He didn’t bleed for over hundred yards but I found him piled up 200yds away. I called in reinforcements and Heather, kids and Ellie showed up to help skin and pack out. Shot at 820am, let sit and found at 10am, skinned some while waiting on kids then went to work hard around 2pm, we had a 3.2 mile hike out with some surrounding lightning storms to keep us on our toes. We made it to the truck for 7pm with about 160lbs of meat 🥩 . By then we had nene/pops to take kids and drop us an atv. Me and Heather had to take an hour drive then 30 minute atv trail to get within .8 miles/500ft el. of the remaining two bags and antlers.
